John Horse and the Black Seminoles — Largest Slave Revolt in American History?

JohnHorse.Com is an extensive, but ultimately frustrating, look at the role that rebellious plantation slaves played in the Second Seminole War. Bird claims that by April 1836, almost 400 slaves had “defected to the Seminoles.”

The site’s author, J.B. Bird, argues that professional historians have largely ignored the large number of slaves who left their plantation to join the Seminoles in fighting against white plantation owners due to a bias toward diminishing acts of resistance by slaves. He doesn’t, however, provide any sort of critical look at traditional historian’s view of the role of black slaves in the Second Seminole War, so we’re left taking his word for it.

Frankly, although the site has some interesting information, the thing it is being noticed and praised for widely is the same thing that I found extraordinarily annoying — the site breaks up this extensive information about John Horse, the Seminoles, and plantation slaves into 400 small chunks of information Power Point style. That pretty much kills the narrative flow and makes it difficult to follow Bird’s argument as a whole.

Its a shame he doesn’t have the full text of his chunked-up thesis on the Seminoles available somewhere on his site for those who want more than the slideshow version of his research.

Captain America Kaput

After bringing back Bucky, Marvel has now decided to go and off Captain America as part of its Civil War event.

Not that the death of a character in a comic book ever really means anything. As the Associated Press notes, Marvel is developing a Cap movie, so it is unlikely he’ll be “dead” for long.

Toy Instructions Wiki

Toy Instructions features scans of user manuals, instructions and guides for various toys and games. It also has links to user manuals and instructions for toys that toy manufacturers themselves have been thoughtful enough to provide.

For example, I had no idea that Bandai has downloadable PDF instruction sheets for all of the Teen Titans vehicles I’ve got littering my basement office. Excellent.

CNET Continues Its Comic Book Reign of Error

CNET continues its woeful and error-filled coverage of all-things comics with its latest story about forthcoming straight-to-DVD animated movies from DC. Following on Marvel’s success with animated Avengers and Iron Man movies, DC is getting into the game by producing its own straight-to-DVD releases.

According to CNET’s Neha Tiwari,

Batman and Superman are no strangers to the big screen, but their animated counterparts have yet to step in the limelight. This September, comic-giant DC Comics will be changing its path by releasing its first animated movie, Superman Doomsday, based on the 1993 storyline involving the man of steel.

Well yeah, I guess . . . as long as you completely ignore theatrical releases of DC properties such as 1993s animated Batman: Mask of the Phantasm or the much better Return of the Joker (especially the not-really-appropriate-for-kids uncut version).

Ah, but this is the same CNET that a couple years ago lamented that no comics company had released their back catalogs on CD or DVD, despite the fact that at the time Marvel had released several DVD-based compilations of thousands of digitized comics of several of its properties.

I guess CNET must block Google so the editors and reporters are unable to do any fact checking on this sort of stuff.

Out of the Park Baseball 2007

Despite my love of baseball sims in general and Out of the Park Baseball, specifically, I pretty much ignored the 2006 version and never even considered purchasing a copy — OOTP 2006 came in seriously late and then buggy as hell. The discussion forums made entertaining reading for months after release.

Now, OOTP 2007 is a little over two weeks from release and, based on the feature list and comments from beta testers in the OOTP forums, this is going to be the sim that everyone had hoped OOTP 2006 would be.

The feature changes from 2006 is jaw-dropping impressive.

I’m still going to wait and see what sort of reviews this gets in the first couple weeks after release, but this looks like it could be the best baseball sim yet.
