Some commentators and critics of the United Kingdom’s efforts to ban fox hunting have pointed to a seeming hypocrisy. Why, they ask, is fox hunting banned when halal and kosher killing of animals is permitted?
As an answer, the UK Animal Welfare Minister Elliot Morley recently revaled that, “We are in the process of producing draft Codes of Practice on the slaughter of animals and poultry, including the religious slaughter, with the aim of improving the welfare of the animals and birds at slaughter.”
According to the Sunday Mercury, the government’s advisory board, the Animal Welfare Council, is currently investigating welfare issues surrounding the ritual slaughter of animals as well.
