Why Not Send Drunk Driver to Jail for 10 Years Rather Than Just 180 Days?

Rocky Anderson, 24, recently plead guilty to kill a 10 year old boy while he was driving while intoxicated. The judge is apparently proud of this creative sentence,

A man who admitted to driving drunk when he hit and killed a 10-year-old boy was sentenced to spend Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and the child’s birthday in jail for the next 10 years.

. . .

Anderson will be required to serve nine days in jail every June — including June 8, Braden’s birthday — and nine days every December and January, including Christmas and New Year’s.

Kill a child while drunk and serve just 180 days in jail? That’s just obscene. Where exactly is the deterrent for drunk driving when you can get off with such a light sentence even for killing a young child?
