Laptop Withdrawal

Aaargh…a weekend without my laptop (which is currently being repaired) is like a day without caffeine — serious withdrawal symptoms ensue.

HP finally got its act together as far as meeting the conditions outlined in the warranty I paid for, but dealing with them is still a bit like being trapped in a Lewis Carroll novel.

For example, they were supposed to have FedEx come to my office last Wednesday to pick up my laptop. I gave them my office address and the woman I talked to even mentioned that she had to do the same thing because no one is ever home at her house during the day. So what happens — they send FedEx to my house, of course, and the laptop remained packaged up in my office.

Then much wailing and gnashing of teeth ensued in calls and e-mails to HP support over the new proposed pickup day — Monday, April 2, 2004. So which was it? Monday or April 2, I wanted to know, but never was able to get an answer. Instead I repeatedly called the support line until I could get someone with a North American accent who agreed to my demand to send someone out Thursday afternoon, and FedEx picked up my laptop promptly.

Not that this meant much to HP — their support site still shows my laptop as scheduled for pickup on April 2, but today I received a call from a FedEx driver who wanted to know where to go to pick up my laptop! Who knows where or when they’ll try to deliver it.

Since I was looking at total electronics withdrawal, I went out and bought a PlayStation 2 and some games for the wife and I to play. The thing about Lisa is that she generally doesn’t really get into video games, but when she does she usually ends up kicking my ass at the ones she’s interested in.

So she’s already on the verge of repeatedly humiliating me at Simpson’s Road Rage, and she’s hogging all the gold and cool items in Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. Oy.
