Police in Superior Township, Michigan, are investigating several arsons that appear to be the work of the Earth Liberation Front.
According to a report in the Ann Arbor News, four homes under construction have been set on fire in the last seven months in Superior Township. At two fires in March, those responsible spray-painted “elf” and “no sprawl” on the door of a garage attached to one of the homes. Police said an accelerant was apparently used in the fires, so they are definitely acts of arson.
An ELF press officer told the Ann Arbor News via e-mail that it hadn’t received any specific claim of responsibility for the fires but that,
However, spray-painting at the scene can be construed as a claim of responsibility by the parties that committed the act. We have no statement at this time, except to say that this action is consistent with actions that the ELF has taken in the past regarding urban sprawl.
