The BBC ran report in March about a new Unicef report which the BBC headlined, “Millions of children malnourished.” According to the BBC,
A total of 150m[illion] children can be defined as suffering from malnutrition, says the Unicef report.

The report did contain some good news about progress in the fight against malnutrition. Widespread deficiencies in Vitamin A and iodine have been addressed by supplementing household salt with these — more than 70% of the developing world now uses salt with these added ingredients.
But the BBC actually left out the most important piece of information — the trend. Okay, 150 million children are suffering from malnutrition, but is that higher or lower than a decade ago?
In fact the number of malnourished children fell from 177 million in 1990 to 149 million in 2000 — a decline of 28 million at a time when world population was growing quickly.
Proportionally, 32 percent of children in developing countries were malnourished in 1990 compared to 27 percent malnourished in 2000.
Not surprisingly, slow progress in Africa is dragging down those statistics. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the percentage of malnourished children is under 10 percent and showed a small improvement in the 1990s. In Asia, malnourishment started off the 1990s close to 37 percent but ended the decade under 30 percent.
Africa is another story. Malnourishment among children under the age of 5 actually increased in Africa during the 1990s. All areas of Africa saw increases in Malnourishment except for Northern Africa which saw a very tiny drop in the level of malnourishment.
Africa is, of course, still the part of the developing world most severely affected by non-democratic regimes and the locus of many of the world’s ongoing wars.
Until that problem is solved, meeting Unicef’s goal of reducing child malnutrition by 50 percent is going to be very difficult to meet.
