I was pretty proud of myself that it took me almost 4 months after buying a new Hewlett Packard machine before I managed to completely wipe out the hard drive (hint — when making changes to partitions, double check to make sure you’re making the changes to the correct drive. Oy.)
No problem, I’m fanatical about backing my system up so I lost very little data. All I needed to do was restore the OS and then restore the backups. The only problem was that one of the CDs needed to restore the OS was defective — there were several crucial files on the CD that could not be restored.
So I call up HP support since the computer’s still under the one year parts, etc. warranty, only to be informed that the CDs are not considered to be “parts” but rather are considered “software and manuals” which only have a 90 day warranty, even for defective media. Dumb.
Yeah it’s only $7.50 for replacement CDs, but it is the principle at stake. So instead I installed Windows 98 using restore disks from my wife’s HP machine, which actually worked out better in the end since I had a lot more problems with Windows Millennium.
