Freeware Writing Tools for Windows

With numerous web sites to manage and a lot of other side projects, I am always looking for ways to do things faster and more efficiently. The other day, almost by accident, I ran across an excellent Windows-only freeware program called Keynote.

In many ways Keynote is simply a glorified outliner, but it’s one of the best outliners I’ve run across. Here’s a screen shot of the application:

Using the tabbed interface I can create a single file for each week, for example, and then have a separate tab for each web site which then has an outline for the days of the week. Here’s a screenshot, for example, of the file I’m writing this on:

Unlike other outliners I’ve used, Keynote is relatively intuitive, very fast and even though it is freeware it hasn’t crashed on me yet (whereas most freeware or shareware outliners I can figure out how to reliably crash pretty quickly).

The only real drawback is the lack of a spell checker, but I downloaded the freeware All Purpose Spell-Checker which works pretty well with Keynote (and any other windows program for that matter). Plus, as I mentioned, the program is Windows only though there are similar programs available for the Mac from other developers.

Other than that, though, Keynote works a lot better than every other outline/writing package out there, including many that aren’t so cheap. I highly recommend it.
