Jagged Alliance 2 and Dead State

Awhile ago I was lamenting what appears to be an attempt to make a quick buck off of the Jagged Alliance franchise. Anyway, what I didn’t realize at the time is that Jagged Alliance 2 is still available courtesy of Good Old Games. For $9.99, you can get a copy of the old school turn-based tactical strategy game completely DRM free.

Additionally, there is a user-created 1.13 patch to Jagged Alliance 2 that makes a number of excellent changes, including increasing the resolution of the game to 1024×768. Make no mistake, JA2’s graphics have 20th century written all over them, but the patch helps.

Finally, it looks like turn-based strategy isn’t quite dead yet. Double Bear Productions is in active development of Dead State — a turn-based strategy/RPG in which you try to keep survivors alive after a zombie apocalypse. This one’s looking good, though obviously these games live and die by gameplay.

Jagged Alliance Online?

Not sure what the current status of this is, but back in August bitComposer Games announced a browser-based MMO Jagged Alliance Online game. The game is supposedly releasing sometime in 2011.

In theory, this could be an awesome game, but will probably get completely screwed up by the time it actually gets released if previous efforts to make money from nostaliga over Jagged Alliance is any guide. This will probably end up as Farmville With Mercs. Please, please, just let these old IPs die and come up with something new and original.
