Sergeant Major Dan Daly: Do You Want To Live Forever?

Dan Daly is notable for being one of a very small number of Americans who have received the Medal of Honor twice: first for his actions during the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, and then later for his actions in Haiti in 1915.

Daly is also apparently responsible for popularizing a phrase which has become almost cliche due to its overuse in films and pop culture,

Daly is popularly attributed in Marine Corps lore, on June 6, 1918, as yelling, “Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?” to his men during the Battle of Belleau Wood. Daly later told a Marine Corps historian that his words were “For Christ’s sake men—come on! Do you want to live forever?”
