I have a lot of love for the Logitech TrackMan Wheel — over the last decade or so, I’ve bought about 10 of these at $30-$40 apiece. I absolutely love these things, and was very geeked to learn that Logitech was making a cordless version.
Finally getting one of these in my hands, however, revealed a major problem and disappointment. The cordless TrackMan looks and works great. Functionally, I do not notice any difference from the corded version.
The problem is in the battery compartment that holds the single-AA battery. The battery cover is a small piece of plastic that has a thin, long rectangular slot offset about 1/8″ from the left edge of the cover. There is a slight indentation next to this edge, and to open the battery cover you have to apply force to the edge, pushing the slot inward so the thin slot is bridge and the locking mechanism is moved out of the locking position.
I cannot put into words how much I loathe this particular design, which from my experience inevitably breaks after just a few uses. Other cordless mice I’ve used have included a plastic screw-type mechanism for releasing the battery compartment which avoids applying force to such a thin part of the cover.
For $40, I expected a bit more.
