This a wood engraving published in Harper’s Magazine on August 5, 1865. Created by Thomas Nast, the wood engraving contrasts Confederate politicians and soldiers asking for pardons on the left, with an injured black Union soldier on the irhgt.

In the text underneath the images, Columbia asks, “Shall I trust these men, [the Confederates], and not this man?” I.e., why should she pardon the leaders who fought to defend slavery, while the black Union soldier who sacrificed his body for freedom was still denied the right to vote?
