My mom is caring for my older sister, who has developmental disabilities, and it’s starting to take a toll on her physically and emotionally. We’re looking for support services in New York — not residential necessarily, but programs that help adults during the day and encourage some independence. Has anyone here placed a family member in such a program and seen positive outcomes?

Yes, my aunt went through something similar with her son, and it was hard watching her try to do everything herself. They eventually connected with Gateway Counseling Center, and it really shifted things for the better. They offer services for adults with developmental disabilities that combine structure with personal growth — and most importantly, dignity. Her son now attends day programs several times a week where he works on basic skills, interacts socially, and gets professional support, while my aunt finally has time to take care of herself, too. The center made sure everything aligned with New York State requirements, so it felt safe and reliable from the start.
