Turkmenistan Lifting Ban on Opera and Circuses — No Word on Ballet, Yet

A number of news agencies are reporting that Turkmenistan is lifting its seven-year old ban on opera and circuses. The ban had been put in place by dictator and U.S. ally Saparmurat Niyazov who finally had the good sense to die of a heart attack in 2006.

New Turkeminstan strongman Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov is apparently clearing out some of Niyazov’s more bizarre directives.

So far, though, no word on whether the bans on ballet, lip synching, or recorded music were also being lifted.
