This is apparently a reference to the Santa Cruz Sea Monster. In 1925, the carcass of an animal was discovered on a beach northwest of Santa Cruz, California.

Although some people maintain it was the carcass of a plesiosaurus, the most likely explanation is that it was the decaying carcass of a Baird’s beaked whale.
