The Independent did a story at the end of June about animal rights extremism in the UK that included coverage of Victims of Animal Rights Extremism, a group headed by Mark Matfield that highlights the ongoing threats and violence that those in animal industries — and increasingly frequently in non-animal industries — face from activists.
The Independent lead off its story with a quote from this fascinating letter from VARE’s web site in which an animal rights extremist claims to have AIDS and threatens,
Be very carefull [sic] of people walking up behind you because it would not take me very long to jab you with one of my infected needles. I know what you look like. I’m waiting my time. I will get you unless I hear you’ve stopped supporting H.L.S. If you feel a jab when you’re walking the street alone, don’t worry it will only be me infecting you with AIDS.
British animal rights activists are certainly giving an important demonstration of what passes for compassion in the animal rights movement.
