BetterSearch 1.7 for Firefox

BetterSearch is an excellent example of the sort of cool extensions that people are writing for Firefox. BetterSearch enhances Google and other search engines by including thumbnails of the pages returned as search results. Its got pretty sophisticated options, too — I’ve got it set up to show small thumbnails and then big thumbnails on a mouseover. At least with Google, its building the thumbnails based on the Google cache of the page.

Very cool.

New vCJD Data, Projections Released in the UK

Lets take a look at where the United Kingdom is in its vCJD breakout, usually ascribed to the transmission of Mad Cow Disease.

In 2004, the number of people who died from vCJD continued to decline. A total of 9 people died from vCJD in 2004, compared to 18 deaths in 2003.

So far, a total of 148 people have died from vCJD and there are currently 5 people alive who are believed to be suffering from vCJD.

How many more people are likely to die from vCJD? An Imperial College London study released in January suggests that about 70 more people in Great Britain will become ill with vCJD.

Thousands of people likely harbor the defective prions, but for a variety of reasons will never exhibit symptoms of the disease in their lifetimes. Only about 40 percent of the British population has the specific genetic makeup that makes them susceptible to the disease. Moreover even in those susceptible to the disease, for most the incubation period will last longer than their lifespan.

Five New Jersey Activists Set for Trial in Seaboard Securities Protest

The New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance sent out an appeal for funds in late December to aid five activists set to go on trial in late January.

According to the appeal,

Back in July, five activists were arrested at a silent, peaceful protest against Seaboard Securities, a market maker which allows Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) to trade its stocks. The activists were simply displaying their disapproval of Seaboard’s complicity in the murders of 500 animals a day at HLS — a lab which conducts cruel procedures on animals in the name of “science.” . . .

These false arrests have proven to be a financial hardship for two of the activists — one an NJARA member and employee — who have retained a lawyer to help fight the false allegations and defend their right to free speech for the animals.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find much information about the original arrests or the pending trial (even the NJARA’s website has no mention of it), so anyone who can point me to additional information on this case would be greatly appreciated.
