GameSpot notes that for 2008 total sales of video game software was greater than the combined sales of DVD and Blu-Ray movies. Worldwide, game software sales totaled $32 billion, while DVD/Blu-Ray sales totaled $29 billion. These figures do exclude revenue generated from DVD/Blu-ray rentals.
Still, that’s a fairly impressive trend, and one that is only going to become more pronounced in the years ahead. According to GameSpot, NPD — who compiles these sales statistics — estimates that in 2009, video game sales will make up 57 percent of all home enteratinment sales.
This is unsurprising to me. For teens and adults, at least, once through a movie and you’re pretty well done. Fallout? Book me out for the first of the year, I’ll be occupied.
Good point. Dark Knight is about $36 retail on Blu-Ray. I’ve watched it 3-4 times, so I would have gotten maybe 8 hours of entertainment if I’d bothered to actually buy it.
Left4Dead cost me $60 and so far maybe >100 hours.
However, watching a DVD never gives you the distinct impression that you absolutely suck compared to 15 year olds, nor does the DVD constantly yell “faggot” at you while connected to the Internets.
